Eli Avisera was born in Jerusalem,Israel in 1960. He grew up in
Jerusalem, and attended
the School of Wood Art in Jerusalem from 1973 to 1977. Once he graduated, Eli became a professional
woodworker, cabinet maker and woodturner.
Now, with over 30 years of experience, Eli is an
international woodturning demonstrator and teacher. He has been invited to countries around
the world to demonstrate his unique woodworking and woodturning techniques.
Eli also created his own
signature line of wood turning tools, now marketed by Hamlet Tools, featuring Eli’s trademark
double bevel grind on his gouges, swept-back wings on his spindle roughing gouge, and convex
grinds on his unique bowl finishing tools, his skew chisels and parting tools. Eli developed
special combination tools that are much safer and easier to use for spindle work – Eli did
this when he was teaching his 8-year old son to turn. These tools represent the culmination
of Eli’s 30 years of experience and experimentation.
In 1988 Eli established the
"Wood Craft Center" in Jerusalem (http://www.avisera.co.il/content/default1.asp) where he teaches workshops for
furniture building, woodturning and wood carving at all skill levels. To date, Eli has taught
hundreds of students around the world and has been instrumental in promoting wood art in
almost all of the major western countries andJapan.
In 2003 Eli was
invited to theWoodturningCenter, inPhiladelphia,PA, (http://www.woodturningcenter.org/itemenu.html) as an International Turning Exchange
instruction (“ITE”). ITE is a prestigious International event, bringing together every year a
small group of carefully selected Wood Masters to share their knowledge and collaborate on
creating wood art. In early 2009 construction started on Eli’s UK-based Woodturning School at the KTMP Hunters Lodge Studio in Lincolnshire. The school opened for
tuition in May 2009. It is sponsored by Oneway Lathes and Hamlet Tools. The school will also
be one of the few to offer dedicated access and facilities for disabled/elderly
woodturners.
Eli is one of the leading
wood art masters in and his creations are exhibited in many exhibitions and private
collection both locally in Israel and around the
world.
